In our previous apartment we heard firecrackers outside our window and looked out to see a neighbor with a brand new, bright orange Volkswagen. In the winter we moved into a new apartment complex and it seems we have new people moving in every weekend. We are on the 11th story and it provides a good view down to the street where very long, red strings of firecrackers are lit for those occasions as well.
I’m not sure why it is or what all occasions they are lit for, but I do know it is very often. “Often” meaning, daily, we hear firecrackers. Maybe it’s just what you do and no one knows why. I just assumed people were happy and wanted to celebrate. But assumptions are not dependable things. I’ve heard they are lit to ward off any bad luck related to the new car or new apartment. To me it’s a happy sound, especially when they are lit in front of our building’s entrance because each string of fireworks brings hope of another neighbor!
