5th month 5th day festival. . .

Experiencing holidays and traditions of a culture is a fascinating part of living in a country where you did not grow up.  A couple different people brought us plastic grocery type bags with these homemade treats.  We were to boil them for 15 minutes, then peel away the leaf and enjoy the sticky rice mixture with a variety of date in the center.

We enjoyed our first exposure to this festival new to us.  A fellow student also gave us some moon cakes pictured below.

Unfortunately in this part of China there are no boat races to participate in or watch, but we got a call from a friend in the states who wished us well on his country’s holiday so we were happy.  Wikipedia has a little different take on the holiday, but if you are curious to read more, you can do so here.

The kids probably won’t be requesting to eat these again 🙂 but I liked them! It also seems a time of giving as it was common to see people walking down the street carrying boxes; presumably to give to others.

Looking forward to next year. . .
