Feeling pretty optimistic today about language learning. I mean, I’m getting used to the idea that each syllable probably has multiple meanings (even though they sound the SAME with the SAME tone) but at least each distinct meaning has it’s own distinctly different written Chinese character, right?

Opened the Dictionary.

Looked for entry for a new vocabulary word.

Found it.

No… wait… I found FIVE…

FIVE! dictionary entries with DIFFERENT meanings for the SAME written Chinese character! Oh, and one of those entries went on to explain how when it is placed right before this one particular other character, then it has a whole other meaning UNrelated to what it means when you see it written before most other characters.  You won’t be surprised to find my optimism has faded, but my respect for those who use the Chinese language in everyday life has certainly increased!

Fruit Cups have a whole different meaning here in western China. On the street you can buy literal plastic cups with fresh fruit in them. Pinapple, Watermelon and the orange melon too. . .

Haha, when I was reading the first paragraph I knew what will happen…. Well, you will handle it without problem. Forget grammar and all the rules, use this language. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Keep writing Chinese emails to us 😉
